".. If you aim for the charts, why should your 7" have a b-side? It's not a question I raise, but in the 80s there was a dutch guy who said his 7" didn't need a b-side, since nobody ever plays a b-side. I am not sure if my local heroes The Hitmachine thought along similar lines when they released 'IeOeAa', but they offer just one track here too. Probably not, since The Hitmachine, despite their name, is hardly a machine to produce hits in the charts. The fluctuating membership guarantees always a surprise. They play free rock, techno, schlagers and noise, and sometimes all of that at the same time. This side is a bit of sound poetry like, in the best dada tradition (shouting rather than singing), with some guitar strumming in the best solitary singer song writing tradition: not a single note too much. Quite a surprise, and then probably no surprise at all. Outsider music, outside any mainstream, hype or scene. Quite a daring move to release this in this way, but if you're an outsider: what else can you do. Strangest record of the week by any account." (FdW)

Ten unique cut up compositions. Electronic short-tracks or 'distorted miniatures'. With an average of two minutes a song. Sample based, noisy abstractions everyone should hear. Rich in melody and diverse in rythm. Bertin is experimenting with everyday songstructures and cuts up recordings with a blunt axe to make them fit. Layered with high pitched clitching vocals and similarly entertaining guitars. Some samples from the black ark studio were blent in a é-mix of 'Treveling'. Yes, it's all killer! The timing and variation keeps it light. And you just might not get enough of it. Experience some analogue worms knibbling on 'kapotte muziek'.

Harry's keyboard has been producing Bach, Beatles and some clever barrel organ sounds ever since Harry got his organ back from the factory. Where he had send it with the task to rearrange it so it could produce the sounds and structures he needed. Harry Merry's hilarious apearance and total baroque musical style is often misunderstood in the popscene, mainly seen as a funny gimmick. He first got recognised in the Rotterdam artscene as a representant of typical dutch avantgarde music. Like Willem Breuker uses march music, Harry uses the street organ sound and sings with a strong dutch accent and puts these typical elements in a new perspective. Harry is a talented composer being ironic and absurd, singing in his own unique way about the Panorama paper, moody busdrivers and Hoydenish Ambrosial. New kids on the block Frans de Waard and Roel Meelkop experiment with the old time religion of remixing. Fast and bulbous. It's here: the long awaited first 7" by Zebra. Introducing some revolutionary compositional techniqes, Zebra will make a landmark in contemporary pop music. Using royalty as a singer and MB as a background chorus, this music will stick in your brain for a long time to come. Let's face it: this is the first single ever to feature King Leif as a lead vocalist. Not only is this a unique opportunity to catch the breathtaking vocals of one of the most democratic kings in the world (he GROOVES!), it also enables you to fully appreciate the marvellous vocal skills of MB, the world's most daring and ambitious background singer (she ROCKS!). The music basically functions as a perfect backdrop for these heartwarming singers, an opus by itself. Produced by Zebra, it shows all the features that a geat song needs: warmth, depth and feeling (they FUNK!). For the flip-side Zebra turned over one of their favourite records to one of their favourite remixers. Freiband takes 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' into a computer crash and for a while it was a concert favourite, but luckily 'Last Night A DJ Saved My File'. So, don't just wait around, order now! A distorted playing band on the edge of feedback sticking to one beat on side a; Side b provides a whirl off phasing polyrhythmic noise This 7'' contains one of the band's ugliest faces: a live recording of The Hitmachine's core business today; putting conventional rock 'n roll instruments to the test. This is a beautiful addition to their diversity of musical styles, ranging from popsynthsongs to electro-acoustic pieces, as can be heard on their first 12" release 'Trouwen met je Neef" on Olé-records.

There's nothing mechanical about this outsider extravaganza from Nijmegen. It's electro-acoustic singer/songwriter material mixed with noise escapades and weird lo-fi interludes. Riding on the back of Hank Williams, and sailing the seven seas, Stefan gives you the shivers, with flimmering chiqueness. Haunting us all into past times. Don Quichot fights future Jeff Buckley, T-rex and Mahatma Gandhi. There's no way to describe what it does to a heart, only that it'll melt. And, after listening to this record, over and over again, it'l build up again.
